LaSalle to host pair of Canadian championships

The LaSalle Turtle Club will host two Canadian softball championships this week at the Turtle Club Park in LaSalle.

The major division softball championship begins today with a game between the Turtle Club and Windsor South at 6 p.m.

Windsor South takes on Victoria Thursday at 6 p.m.

Games continue through the final Sunday at 6 p.m., with the winner advancing to the world series Aug. 11-17 in Portland, Ore.

Saturday is the opener of the junior division softball Canadian championships also at Turtle Club Park.

That series features the Windsor South Canadians against Victoria in the opener while Sunday, Victoria faces Oyen.

Games continue through to Wednesday's final.

All games are at 6 p.m.

ORIOLES FIRST

The Woodslee Orioles won the 35-and-over division of the Canadian National Oldtimers baseball tournament on the weekend in Burlington, beating the Yarmouth Redsox 11-4 in the final.

Pitchers Todd Bowman, Aaron Howell, Kurt Curtis and Brian Dunn combined for the win.

Sean McCabe was named the game MVP with three hits and three RBIs.

The Orioles went 6-1 at the tournament and defeated the Tecumseh GG's 10-8 Sunday in semifinal action to advance.

MIC MAC PLAYOFFS

The Mic Mac Junior League playoffs start Friday at Mic Mac Park.

Woodslee plays the Windsor Stars to open Minor Division competition at 5: 45 p.m.

A matchup between Walker Homesites and the LaSalle Titan bantam team follows at 8 p.m.

Both games are at Soulliere Field.

In Major Division action at Cullen Field, the Windsor Selects 16's play either the Walker Homesite Hawks or Tecumseh Thunder minor team at 5: 45 p.m. and the Tecumseh 17's take on Mic-Mac at 8 p.m.

Games continue through Sunday's final at noon.

A second game, if necessary, will start 30 minutes later.

The Hawks must win against Amherstburg Thursday in order to qualify for the playoffs.

If they lose, the Tecumseh minors secure the spot.

In a Mic Mac makeup game Tuesday, the Hawks defeated the Tecumseh 17's in a comefrom-behind 6-5 victory.

David Ward pitched a complete game for the victory while Adam Prior drove in the winning run.

CHIEFS CHAMPS

The Windsor Chiefs 60's men's slo-pitch team captured their second consecutive NSA Canadian slo-pitch title Monday in Hamilton following a 20-5 victory over London Carr's Shell.

The Chiefs went unbeaten in their division, winning 6 of 7 games via the mercy rule.

It's their third tournament win of the season, having previously captured the Buckeye Classic and Heart of Ohio tournaments in Akron and Columbus Ohio respectively.

FASTBALL TITLE

Windsor's Kevin Cook, LaSalle's Paul Poulin and the Oakville Golden A's fastball team went undefeated to win the 44-and-over Tier I division championship at the Canadian National Oldtimers Baseball Federation nationals on the weekend in Burlington.

Cook pitched two innings with no runs and four strikeouts in an 11-8 win over Nova Scotia in Monday's final.

Poulin, whose hitting helped the A's to a 6-0 record, was named a tournament MVP.

TITANS BASEBALL

The LaSalle Titans bantam baseball team finished fourth at a provincial elimination tournament on the weekend in Mississauga, losing their final game to Georgetown 15-14.

Rex Romero had two wins on the mound and Noah Renaud, Matt PeBenito, Khaliel James, and Joey Romaniuk were among tournament leaders hitting over .500.

ATTACK COACH

The OHL champion Owen Sound Attack have called a press conference for today where Greg Ireland will be named head coach.

"Greg brings a wealth of experience from the professional ranks having been a head coach in both the East Coast Hockey League and the American Hockey League," Attack general manager Dale DeGray said.

Ireland coached San Antonio of the AHL this past season and has previously coached Grand Rapids.

He replaces Mark Reeds, who took an assistant coaching job with the Ottawa Senators.

The Attack eliminated the Spits from the playoffs last year.

JONES ON A ROLL

Blenheim's Shawn Jones pulled off a last-lap pass of Merlin's Jody Mason to extend his Comp 4 feature win streak to nine straight weeks Saturday during South Buxton' Raceway's 40th anniversary night.

Mason led the first 14 laps before Jones got a run on the inside on the final circuit, making the winning pass coming out of turn two to take the lead for his ninth straight feature checkered flag.

Denis DeSerrano, who won the class's first two features in May before Jones began his winning streak, finished fourth while fellow Cottam driver Rob Quick was fifth.

Merlin's Steve Shaw rallied in the late laps to win his third straight Sport Stocks feature and fourth of the season, beating Essex's Gerald Martin with two laps to go. Kingsville's Rob Young finished fourth.

Shrewsbury Jim Dale Jr. passed Leamington's Joel Dick for the lead on the third lap and led the final 17 circuits to win his fifth UMP Modified feature of the year.

Dick exited with mechanical issues five laps later and finished 12th.

Belle River's Mario Toniolo finished fifth.

In the night's main event, Greg Oakes, of Franklinville, N.Y., led all 30 laps to win the Ontario Dirt Late Model feature.

Three Kent County drivers took the next three spots with Blenheim's Andrew Reaume second, Ridgetown's Adam West third and Charing Cross' Chris Ross fourth.

South Buxton hosts its third Tractor Pull Friday, featuring modified tractors and trucks from the Southwestern Ontario Tractor Pullers Association.

Stock car racing returns the following night with all four classes in action.

Gates open at 5: 30 p.m., with the competition starting at 7 p.m. both nights.

SPENCER WINS

Three-time 75 kg world boxing champion Mary Spencer of the Windsor Amateur Boxing Club won a 2-1 decision over fivetime 81 kg Canadian champ Melinda Watpool Saturday at the new sports complex in Amherstburg.

In addition to Spencer, 15-year-old two-time Canadian champ Jocelyn Guenette took a 3-0 decision over Shayneisha Kelly of Atlas Boxing Club in Toronto.

Also, Mason Blyth won a 3-0 decision over Max Rizzi of Bigtyme Boxing Club in Orangeville.

Guenette defends her title Aug. 15 -21 in Kansas City while Spencer's next bout is Sept. 17 at Drive Logistics (3315 Devon Dr.) in Windsor against Amber Groome of Edmonton.

LOCAL ACES

Bill Stiles used a nine-iron for a hole-in-one on the second hole at Pointe West from 133 yards.

It was witnessed by Don McArthur, Ernie Nesbitt and Donny Pacheco.

John D'Angela used a seveniron to ace the 157-yard 15th hole at Seven Lakes.

It was witnessed by Richard Bondy .

JungSik Jo used an eightiron for a hole-in-one on the 142-yard 15th hole on the Seven Lakes Championship course.

It was witnessed by Steve Lee, Peter Kim and Sung Soo Yang.

Mike Curry used an eightiron to ace the 152-yard third hole on the white nine at Kingsville.

His witnesses were Hohn Fletcher, Tony Konstatino and Randy Guinnette.

Brad Vander Pryt used a gap wedge for a hole-in-one on the Par 3 second hole at Tilbury from 122 yards.

Justin Bulley was the witss.

HUNTER SCORES

Michelle Hunter scored for the Eastside Kickers under-16 girls soccer team in a 2-1 loss to Sarnia Saturday in the Western Ontario Youth Soccer League.

Sunday, the Kickers played to a 0-0 draw at Cambridge.

Also on the weekend, Katelyn Allen scored on a free kick with eight minutes remaining and the under-17 Kickers won 1-0 against Guelph at Mic Mac Park.

The under-15 Kickers will play Thursday in the London Area.

NATIONALS IMPROVE

The Windsor FC Nationals under-15 Level 3 boys soccer team improved to 10-1 following a 6-2 win Saturday against London Byron.

Eriq Jenkins scored a hat trick while Dylan Breitenstein, Tanner Drkulec and Korede Olagbegi scored singles for the Nationals, who take on Woodstock Saturday at Mic Mac Park at noon.
